Course Description

The scientific method is a structured system of hypothesis and experimentation used in all of the sciences, including chemistry, psychology, physics, and biology. Hypothesis testing is the statistical procedure for deciding whether a statement is true or false based on observed data. When you properly set up a hypothesis, you have increased confidence in the results of your analysis and the subsequent decision. In this lesson, you will examine a variety of concepts and formulas from probability and statistics to approach decision making from a rigorous, mathematically supported foundation. This can result in choices that are backed up by sound reasoning, which may make it easier to convince others of the validity of your choice. For the best result, complete "Data Analysis and Probability: Create Effective Graphs," "Data Analysis and Probability: Calculate the Probability of an Outcome," "Decision Analysis: Create a Decision Tree," "Continuous Distributions: Apply Normal Distribution and the Z Table," and "Sampling: Apply Sampling to Data Analysis" prior to taking this lesson.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Examine how to construct a hypothesis that is rigorous and testable
  • Test hypotheses using different types of statistical data
