Course Description

If your blood pressure remains high over time, you may be suffering from a condition called hypertension. Hypertension can be deadly because it can lead to health events like heart disease or stroke. Luckily, like osteoporosis, there are interventions that can help you to prevent and manage hypertension. In this lesson, you will identify the biological causes of high blood pressure. You will examine the dangers of hypertension and determine what factors can put you at risk for hypertension as well as which behaviors can help to reduce its effects. You will also analyze how adjusting your intake of nutrients such as calcium and sodium can help you to lower your blood pressure, and you will consider alternative strategies for hypertension management, including exercise, weight loss, stress reduction, and the consumption of a higher proportion of fruits and vegetables. For the best result, complete three previous lessons in the How Nutrition Affects Cancer, Osteoporosis, and Hypertension series: Growth of Cancer, Nutrients and Bone Health, and Minimizing the Risk of Cancer, prior to taking this lesson.
