Course Description

Another serious medical condition that can develop with age is osteoporosis, or the loss of calcium from bone structures that can leave bones susceptible to breakage. This condition is common in elderly people, as bone integrity naturally decreases with age, but there are ways of minimizing or delaying osteoporosis by engaging in the right type of exercise and eating habits. In this lesson, you will examine the roles of calcium and vitamin D in maintaining bone health and determine how you (and your children, if applicable) can best prevent osteoporosis from happening to you. You will also identify the ways in which your bones change throughout your lifetime and explore the links among vitamin D, calcium intake, exercise, and osteoporosis. For the best result, complete "How Nutrition Affects Cancer, Osteoporosis, and Hypertension: Growth of Cancer" and "How Nutrition Affects Cancer, Osteoporosis, and Hypertension: Minimizing the Risk of Cancer" prior to taking this lesson.
