Course Description

As anyone who has experienced a major health problem knows, weight loss is not always a positive experience. One negative cause of weight loss is malnutrition. When your body fails to get enough of the nutrients it needs, important biological processes like energy production are inhibited. In order to ensure that your body has the tools it needs to function successfully, you must consume the right balance of nutrients. Doing so is especially important for children, who require certain nutrients for normal development. Malnutrition can come in many forms, including deficiencies in nutrients like iron, vitamin B, and folic acid. In this lesson, you will examine the importance of proper nutrition, particularly its role in early childhood development. You will analyze the causes and the biological consequences of certain nutrient deficiencies as well as the effects that malnutrition can have on the body. You will also explore why children in impoverished countries are at higher risk for malnutrition and what needs to change to get them the access to nutrients they need. You will then consider the various ways that nutrition can become entangled with outside agendas. For the best result, complete the four previous lessons in the Managing Weight, Exercise, and Nutrition series: Regulating Body Weight, What Exercise Does to the Body, Nutrients and Athletic Performance, and Iron Deficiency, prior to taking this lesson.
