Course Description

Chances are you have tried to regulate your own body weight at some point in your lifetime. Maybe a doctor has advised you to lose weight, or maybe you took it upon yourself to try to increase your health or change your look. What was your strategy? Dieting is a popular choice for many. While dieting can sometimes lead to successful weight loss in the short term, it is a notoriously unreliable way to regulate body weight over a longer period of time and rarely addresses all the reasons why a person has chosen to lose weight. In this lesson, you will examine diets as a tool for regulating body weight and analyze the reasons that diets do not work in the long term. You will consider the impact of health risks and social discrimination on people's motivation to follow diets, and you will describe self-weighing as an alternative option to diets for regulating body weight. You will also explain why, despite arguably being the most popular option, dieting alone is not an effective method for regulating body weight as well as why it is therefore important to seek other interventions as alternatives or additions to dieting.
