Course Description

There are two main types of theories of eating: biological theories like the gastric theory of eating, or those that attribute regulation of food intake to your body; and environmental theories, or those that attribute regulation of food intake to your environment. Understanding the difference between these two types of theories is critical to determining what is and is not within your control when making decisions about controlling your body weight. In this lesson, you will explore the main biological theories of eating: glucose theories, central theories, and set-point theory. While each theory has certain evidence to support it, each also has factors that significantly complicate or debunk its validity. You will also practice evaluating scientific studies so you can better determine which claims are likely valid and which should be challenged. For the best result, complete these lessons in the Energy Expenditure and Theories of Eating series prior to taking this lesson: Measuring Energy Expenditure, Energy and Food Intake, and Gastric Theory of Eating.
