Course Description

How do you know how much food to eat? Just knowing the numbers — total calories in, total calories out — is a start to managing body weight, but it doesn't answer the question of how food intake is regulated. How and why do you feel hungry? Why do you sometimes keep eating even after the feeling of hunger goes away? What factors affect your food intake? There are a variety of answers to these questions — and many scientists disagree about the best answers. In this lesson, you will explore the first theory, or gastric theory of eating, which posits that your body regulates food intake based on how stretched your stomach is. For the best result, complete "Energy Expenditure and Theories of Eating: Measuring Energy Expenditure" and "Energy Expenditure and Theories of Eating: Energy and Food Intake" prior to taking this lesson.
