Course Description

The process of fat accumulating in your arteries is called atherosclerosis. Too much fat buildup can lead to common but dangerous conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots. Understanding the role of fats in causing these conditions is the first step in preventing them in your own life. In this lesson, you will examine how lipids are transported throughout the body. You will investigate the conditions that can lead to the formation of LDL receptors, or fat cells that "stick" to artery walls, and the ways this can affect your body. You will also analyze the process through which LDLs accumulate, grow, and calcify, along with the various well-meaning immune system responses that facilitate these steps.
