Course Description

Once you have identified a trait or traits you would like to breed for, the next step is to select for and increase the proportion of beneficial additive alleles in the population. Breeders must consider the dioecious nature of hemp and take steps to decrease the possibility of inbreeding depression. In this lesson, you will apply the mathematics of the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium to help reduce specific alleles within a given population. You will also examine how molecular markers, when combined with linkage disequilibrium, can be used to help select for beneficial alleles and against deleterious ones. For the best result, complete "Hemp Genetics: Analyze the Behavior of Plant Traits" and "Hemp Genetics: Categorize Hemp Traits" prior to taking this lesson.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Apply the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium to a breeding plan to fix a specific trait
  • Explain how molecular markers can be used in a modern breeding program
