Course Description

When selecting for traits, plant breeders should choose traits that are heritable and not influenced by the environment. Hemp breeders should also account for the effects of alleles on one another as well as generational changes in genotypic variance. In this lesson, you will examine the differences between qualitative and quantitative traits and the sources of variation in physical traits, or phenotypic variance. You will also explore the importance of monitoring variation due to genetic sources, or genotypic variance, in relation to phenotypic variance, or in relation to the environment. For the best result, complete "Hemp Genetics: Analyze the Behavior of Plant Traits" prior to taking this lesson.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Describe the difference between qualitative and quantitative traits and how these are important in hemp breeding
  • Explain how genotypic and phenotypic variance are related
