Course Description

In order to select for traits of interest, plant breeders require a thorough understanding of genetic inheritance from parents to offspring. Recognizing the link between the genetic makeup of an individual, or genotype, and its physical traits, or phenotype, is very important. In this lesson, you will explore how to determine the order of genes on a chromosome and whether genes are linked. You will also examine the use of molecular marker technologies to screen for genetic differences between individuals and aid in trait selection.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Explain how genes influence observable plant traits
  • Create a chromosome map to determine whether genes are linked
