Course Description

You have likely encountered someone who has diabetes. Depending on the type of diabetes, it can strike at different ages, present with different symptoms, and require different treatments. As carbohydrates are absorbed, they naturally cause an increase in blood glucose levels. Diabetes occurs when glucose remains in the blood in too-high quantities and, in order to lower glucose, the body secretes insulin. In this lesson, you will explore the relationship between carbohydrates and diabetes. You will examine insulin and its role in regulating glucose, the benefits and dangers of having glucose in the body, and how the body functions to balance the two. You will also identify the different forms of diabetes and consider available treatment options.
