Course Description

This course outlines the roles and responsibilities held by United Nations Headquarters staff and human resource managers in the field. It is imperative that UN HR managers are well trained and prepared to support field staff, no matter how delicate or dire the situation.

With this goal in mind, this course in a series of three courses serves to train you on the human resources management (HRM) regulations and protocols of the United Nations. This course reviews UN methodologies for planning, monitoring and evaluating HR initiatives as they relate to these regulations and protocols, and illustrates how they fit within the scope of broader UN goals and international mandates. A firm grasp of these concepts is vital to your job performance at the UN.

The United Nations is not subject to the employment laws of any individual Member State, rather it has its own internal justice system to field complaints and resolve disputes among staff members and the organisation. The UN Internal Justice System is an independent, transparent and decentralized body that tends to resolve disputes informally, outside of formal litigation. This course details the inner and outer workings of conflict resolution and dispute settlement at the UN, preparing you for legal participation in the Internal Justice System as HRM jobs require.

In summary, the course is designed to instill core UN values and lay the framework for effective management and career advancement as an HR professional at the UN. Upon completion of the course, you will understand the challenges of international workforce planning and position management amidst sweeping political change and rapidly developing humanitarian crises.
