Course Description

One of the first stages of the hiring process consists of candidate evaluation and selection. In a DEI-centered hiring process, this stage is particularly impactful because it involves many instances of human evaluation, which, in turn, can bring about the risk for bias. Inclusive evaluation and selection processes seek to provide opportunities for equity by removing instances of bias and establishing opportunities to make evaluation and selection consistent, logical, and based on job-relevant information. By using a DEI-centered hiring framework to make these processes more inclusive, you can create more opportunities for candidates of marginalized identities to feel a sense of inclusion and belonging and to be treated equally. In this lesson, you will make a detailed examination of the candidate evaluation and selection process and how it's impacted by human decision making. You'll then explore how bias and its components, as well as legal considerations, influence candidate evaluation and selection, and you'll reflect on the value of having human beings making these decisions. You will conclude by assessing a hypothetical scenario and the effectiveness of hiring practices to foster inclusiveness.
