Course Description

In this lesson, you will explore communication situations within the workplace, including whether or not messages are read, why they're read, and how they're read. Specifically, you will explore how message content, structure, document design features, and phrasing may vary depending on the communication situation, thereby enhancing your own versatility as a writer and leaving you better prepared to respond successfully to all writing opportunities and challenges that you confront in the workplace. You will also take an existing high-stakes workplace message, re-envision the communication situation by changing any of the key audience variables, and modify the message accordingly. These lessons expand on concepts explored in the Business and Management Writing series: Introduction to Reading and Writing in the Workplace, Apply Recommended Document Design Principles, Organize Your Message Using the Appropriate Structure, and Manage Your Style. For the best experience, complete the Business and Management Writing series first, then complete all three lessons in the Advanced Business Writing series in order: Adapt to the Communication Situation, Create an Executive Summary, and Shape Your Message.
