Course Description

The digestive system exists to break down food to the molecular level so that the body can absorb and transport throughout its cells the nutrients it needs to function. The proper functioning of this system is essential to survival. This lesson covers the part of the process that takes place when the food leaves the stomach and moves into the small intestine. If you have ever experienced digestive issues, chances are that they happened during this stage of the digestive process. Knowing what happens in the small intestine is critical to understanding what causes these problems. You will study the process through which food is transferred to the small intestine, the important hormones it secretes, and how certain nutrients are absorbed there. You will also delve into the causes of some common digestive issues, including gluten sensitivity. For the best experience, complete: "Nutrition and the Digestive System: Regulation of Digestive Processes" "Nutrition and the Digestive System: Digestion and the Mouth" and "Nutrition and the Digestive System: Digestion and the Stomach" before taking this lesson.
