Course Description

The ultimate goal of the digestive system is to break food down enough so that the body can extract and absorb its nutrients. By the time food is swallowed, it has already been broken down some by the teeth and saliva, but there is still a big job left to do. In the second stage of the digestive process, the food journeys down the esophagus and into the stomach, where it is broken down the rest of the way. In this lesson, you will study the physiology of swallowing; the various ways that swallowing can go wrong; and the mechanisms at play when choking, vomiting, and purging. You will also identify important stomach enzymes, such as lipase and ghrelin, that assist in the breakdown of food, their roles, and how they are produced. For the best experience, complete: "Nutrition and the Digestive System: Regulation of Digestive Processes" and "Nutrition and the Digestive System: Digestion and the Mouth" before taking this lesson.
