Course Description

When making choices about what to eat, it is important to understand nutrition in the context of the entire body. Digestion begins with the entrance of food into the mouth. From there, a number of processes are initiated to help break down the food. In this lesson, you will examine the first stage of the digestive system, including the various ways that the parasympathetic system prepares the body for its first bite of food, the role of saliva, and the effects of chewing. You will also explore how the foods you eat affect and are affected by your body, and you will identify when popular nutrition claims are science based and when they are not. For the best experience, complete "Nutrition and the Digestive System: Regulation of Digestive Processes" before taking this lesson.
