Course Description

Digestion is comprised of a series of processes that convert the energy from food into energy that can be used and stored by your body. Before delving into the details of these processes, it is important to understand the digestive system's role in the larger context of the way your body reacts to environmental stimuli. In this lesson, you will explore the autonomic nervous system (ANS), how it regulates the body, and its implications for the way food is digested. You will also examine the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the ANS and how they work together to regulate the body, and you will investigate the physiology of digestion by becoming familiar with the environment in which the digestive system functions.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Explain the integration and operations of the nervous system
  • Identify differences between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
