Course Description

It is not uncommon to come across a plant in the landscape that you are unfamiliar with. Before you can consider whether a particular plant is one that you might want to incorporate in a design, you need to positively identify it. This means learning some of what is called 'botanical Latin,' which is the internationally standardized language of scientific naming. In this lesson, you will be introduced to the basics of this system, as well as a 'dichotomous key,' which is the tool that is used to identify an unknown specimen. You will continue to use both botanical Latin and dichotomous keys as you learn more plants to use in your designs. For the best experience, complete "Learning How to Identify Plants: Accurately Describe Leaf Characteristics" and "Learning How to Identify Plants: Creating Useful Plant Drawings" before taking this lesson.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Examine the structure of the scientific naming system, and how it is applied to plants
  • Create an identification key for a small set of plants, using the correct terminology for their features
