Course Description

The people of Germany and Austria have produced wines for thousands of years. Over this time, they have developed practices that have yielded red, white, rosé, still, and sparkling wines, all ranging from very dry to very sweet.

In this lesson, you will begin an exploration of the histories, climates, and topographies of Germany and Austria and consider how these factors set the foundation for the many types of wine varietals and styles produced here. You will also examine the countries' wine classification systems and contemplate how they capture the notable characteristics that result from crafting wines in a cool climate. You will finish this lesson by deciphering common German and Austrian wine label terms and determining what they mean for the wines they describe.
