Course Description

Problems and inequities are not only caused by existing policies but also by deeper social and cultural elements. These include the structure of political institutions as well as the norms, attitudes, and beliefs that are broadly held by members of a community. Changing these aspects of a society — i.e., systems change — is a longer-term, nonlinear process.

In this lesson, you will examine one long-term vision of an equitable society: high-road development. You will discover a questionnaire designed to help you assess whether a particular policy helps you pursue that long-term vision, even as it also addresses a problem in the shorter term. Finally, you will discover three broad strategies for creating high-road change.
