Course Description

At first glance, you may not think of the southern coast of Spain and the Canary Islands as being ideal wine-producing regions; it's very hot, and some island areas even have volcanic soils. Yet this is the area that produces Sherry — that's true Sherry, the wine spoken of by Shakespeare and celebrated by royalty and world leaders for hundreds of years. In this lesson, you will contemplate how the winemakers from this area have managed to adapt to and thrive in this part of Spain over centuries of tradition and experimentation. You will consider the various grape varieties grown here and have the opportunity to study the fortified wine production process and styles.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Discover how winemakers adapted to the unique geological conditions of the island and coastal regions through tradition and experimentation
  • Explore the fortified wine production process and styles from southern coastal Spain and the Canary Islands
