Course Description

In this lesson, you will consider psychological research that challenges the "rational actor" assumption, which formerly dominated explanations of human behavior. According to this assumption, people were believed to possess the ability to identify alternative ways of satisfying their preferences and select among them according to which alternative was the most likely to maximize the benefit. The pioneering research of Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky demonstrates, however, that people often depart from ideal rationality in patterned and predictable ways. By becoming aware of these tendencies, you may be able to take steps to avoid them or reduce their impacts on decision-making.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Examine deviations from rational thought that have negative effects on decision-making
  • Explore the differences between unconscious and deliberate thinking processes
