Course Description

You may already have experience counseling your clientele, but have you ever specifically studied counseling skills? In this lesson on client-directed counseling, you will have the opportunity to explore the counseling role, dive deeper into your relationships with your clients, and identify ways to improve patient outcomes. You will begin to consider different approaches to counseling and examine the client-directed counseling approach. Beth McKinney will share her experience, present applicable research, and provide you with techniques to employ in your practice. Note: Because these skills apply in a variety of environments, let's briefly review some terms you will encounter. You might counsel clients, patients, or customers. For those of you who deal mainly with patients, please know that when we say "client," we are also referring to your patient. Some of you may have used the terms "helper" and "helpee"; in this case, the helper is the counselor and the helpee is the client. Students will be referred to as the counselor, and a patient or customer will be referred to as client within this lesson.
