Course Description

The study of ethics can be enriched by delving into ethical tradition. In this lesson, you will take a quick tour of some leading philosophers in the Western ethical tradition, including Aristotle, Bentham, Hume, Kant, and Isaiah Berlin. The goal is not to turn you into a scholar of the history of ethics but to acquaint you with rich resources that can guide reflection on right and wrong. Note: This lesson includes references to a book by English philosopher Simon Blackburn, entitled “Ethics: A Very Short Introduction” (Oxford University Press 2009). If you wish to reflect further on topics relating to ethics, the Blackburn book is a good resource.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Gain an appreciation for how ethical traditions in general can provide guidance in ethical matters
  • Consider ethical insights associated with leading Western schools of thought
  • Identify ways in which Western schools of thought may be incomplete or flawed
