Course Description

Ethics is sometimes misunderstood. On the one hand, it is an academic discipline involving the study of great thinkers, from Aristotle to Kant to John Rawls. In practice, it is nothing more than the standards to which we hold ourselves and others in our everyday interactions. Whenever you think, "That's not fair," or you observe someone's behavior and say, "What a jerk," you are engaging in ethical reasoning. The study of ethics begins by considering what is involved when we assess our conduct, or the conduct of others, according to the standards of right and wrong. Note: This lesson includes references to a book by English philosopher Simon Blackburn, entitled “Ethics: A Very Short Introduction” (Oxford University Press 2009). If you wish to reflect further on topics addressed in this lesson, the Blackburn book is a good resource.
