Course Description

Private regulation is the practice of a corporation voluntarily regulating itself and the labor conditions in its supply chains. There are three ways in which a firm can might do this: certification, reporting, and a code of conduct. After a company has implemented a code of conduct, it must check or audit the actual labor practices of its suppliers. Many companies are migrating away from using their own people to conduct such labor audits and instead subcontracting this work to third parties. This social auditing industry, which has grown into a multibillion-dollar business, is fraught with problems. In this lesson, you will examine some highly concerning issues with auditing procedures, ratings scales, and results. You will also consider some stunning findings from Professor Kuruvilla's own research about how suppliers sometimes share falsified information with auditors.
