Course Description

The concept of private regulation has different interpretations about what it involves. In this lesson, you will consider Professor Kuruvilla's definition and examine three forms of private regulation: certification, reporting, and corporate code of conduct — the most common method. You will assess the Fair Labor Association's code of conduct. You will discover why a code of conduct, such as those that companies like Nike set up with their overseas suppliers, has limited influence over the supplier's labor standards and practices. Additionally, you will look at how companies from many different industries join multi-stakeholder institutions (MSIs) to help them implement private regulation programs. You will also investigate why independent agency certifications that indicate products are safe or free from issues such as child labor have limitations.
