Course Description

Process and outcomes are often linked, but people sometimes assume that by improving a process, you’ll always improve an outcome. That is not the case, and thinking this way can cause you to miss real opportunities to improve. Furthermore, even if you do everything right, the outcome may still not be what you expected; even excellent processes that have stood the test of time can fail. The question, therefore, is what happens when a process fails? And how do you move forward? In this lesson, you will analyze how process and outcomes relate to quality and compare your organization to five others. You'll also consider how quality and process both impact patient safety. You will review the "Swiss Cheese Model" and the tools you’ll need to complete a root cause or failure mode analysis. Finally, you will perform a root cause analysis using a provided scenario.
