Course Description

Humor is incredibly effective in social situations; it can win you influence, friends, and all kinds of incentives when used correctly. But these correct uses tend to change when you use your humor at work or in professional settings. You obviously can't use the same jokes you might with friends or family, you have to consider who you work with and their different perspectives. Cracking a joke to your boss is going to be different than cracking a joke to a subordinate. In order to understand the importance of these differences, you have to develop a keen sense of empathy and use it when applying humor in workplace situations. Empathy allows you to relate to other people and read the situation carefully to determine if and when a joke would be appreciated, thus creating a more friendly and enjoyable environment to work in for everybody. In this lesson, you'll discover how to use your humor in an empathic way that maximizes effectiveness and enables your coworkers to relate and relax. You'll read examples from assigned readings that provide Ancient Roman parallels of these concepts and complete some activities with branching narratives to provide further examples of how these situations could play out in a workplace.
