Course Description

When using jokes for influence, you need to use foresight to understand how your jokes might be received — they won't always work out the way you expect. If a joke doesn't land, you need to be ready to defuse any tension that might arise from the failed joke. This is a two-fold process: First, you should be properly reading the room or context of the environment in order to weigh whether or not using the joke is worth it. The second part involves pivoting and getting past the awkward reaction if you tell a joke that doesn't land. This lesson will cover this strategic observation for "reading the room," or selecting an appropriate context for a joke, and then having a plan to defuse or de-escalate a joke that doesn't go how you hoped. You will watch videos exploring these issues and complete the associated activities to properly "read the room" and move past the tension of a backfired joke.
