Course Description

Reflect on a time you witnessed a good joke play out in a social setting: Someone with seemingly perfect timing and lightning-fast wit cracks a joke and it lands well; people laugh and the whole atmosphere of the room shifts. This isn't reserved for standup comedy shows or presentations; it can happen during a family get-together, when hanging out with friends, or even over a casual business lunch. The timing and wit for a good joke come naturally to some people, but you can develop and improve your sense of timing with practice and effort. In this lesson, you will examine the value of jokes — how and why they are so effective at winning influence. You will read examples of jokes and the philosophy of humor from ancient Rome and draw parallels to modern examples. Ultimately, in order to develop your skills at telling a great joke for influence, you have to consider the value and timing of the joke to be used.
