Course Description

The brain depends on the rest of the nervous system to gather information, as it has no direct interaction with the outside world. This means that chemicals that modify these nerve signals will affect the brain's perceptions. Over the course of human history, people have discovered how to use these effects to dull pain and alter their conscious states. In this lesson, you will examine plants that act as systemic pain relievers and ones that can affect the perceptions of the mind. Although powerful and potentially dangerous, these plants can have significant benefits if used correctly.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Examine medicinal plants with pain-relieving and consciousness-altering effects on the central nervous system, and choose the appropriate plants to treat particular conditions
  • Consider how medicinal plants might be used in conjunction with existing treatment techniques to provide increased benefits to patients
