Course Description

The cardiovascular system moves blood throughout the body, carrying vital nutrients to the cells and removing waste products. If this system isn't running smoothly, it is hard for the rest of the body to function well. In this lesson, you will examine a selection of plants that can help keep the heart beating strongly and regularly, maintain blood pressure at healthy levels, or help to lower the amount of cholesterol that can clog blood vessels. This lesson assumes you have knowledge of the basic safety implications of plant-based medicines explored in the Historical Applications of Plant-Based Medicine lessons: Examine the History of Ethnobotany, Categorize Active Ingredients, Use Plant-Based Medicine Safely, and Become an Informed Consumer.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Examine the effects of medicinal plants on the cardiovascular system and choose the appropriate plants to treat particular conditions
  • Differentiate among medicinal plants used for regulating the heartbeat and regulating blood pressure, anticoagulants, and cholesterol-lowering plants, and identify when each is the appropriate choice
