Course Description

When you look at designing a concept, the primary goals tend to be around finding a product that meets the needs of individuals in an innovative way. Accomplishing that goal, however, does not mean you have done it in a way that accommodates the user's mental model. This is why you must fully comprehend the value of examining these criteria to have a more solid design concept. In this lesson, you will examine the implications of mental models and their overall applicability to design concepts. You will then take an honest look at the problematic areas of mental models as well as how to avoid or fix them. You'll be guided through various usability approaches and given a tool to aid in those methods. You will also explore the role of metaphors in human-computer interaction (HCI) and how to apply them in design. You will consider affordances, their various forms, and how to apply them to your design. Finally, you will apply metaphors and affordances in your UI sketches to improve your design concept.
