Course Description

Human-computer interaction, or HCI, is not solely concerned with what happens when a person sits down to use a computer. Any interactive technology can benefit from the discipline of HCI, as it deals with what happens when a person employs some kind of technological system to accomplish a goal. Designers must address many different human needs, and this is true whether they are designing products that build on existing ones or products that are brand-new and innovative. In this lesson, you will study and define several key terms that are foundational to HCI. You will also explore how HCI balances the needs of the users against the need to innovate, and you will begin to apply these concepts by analyzing a process for inventing an HCI interface.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Examine and define the elements of human-computer interaction
  • Explore the two dimensions involved in designing interactive technologies from a human-centered design perspective
  • Analyze a process for inventing a human-centered user interface
