Course Description

All plants contain a huge variety of different chemical compounds. Some of these are essential for the basic metabolic functions of the plant, while others have effects on other organisms. It is this second group that has the most potential as medicine. Identifying plants with medicinal activity depends on a knowledge of these types of compounds and how they can be effectively extracted and delivered to a person. After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain the similarities and differences between the major classes of active ingredients in plant-based medicines. You will be able to determine how to best extract the active ingredients from a given plant and explain how those active ingredients will generally affect the body.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Distinguish among the different types of compounds present in plants that may have medicinal, toxic, or psychoactive properties
