Course Description

The first step to understanding how to use plant-based medicine is knowing the development of this knowledge. Humans have been looking to nature to cure illnesses for tens of thousands of years. In the modern sense, ethnobotany is a fusion of several different disciplines, with science just as important as cultural considerations. Examining this history gives a greater appreciation for the worldwide contributions to modern medicine and teaches how to expand our knowledge of plant-based medicines in a sustainable, non-exploitative way.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Explore how different cultures have used plant-based medicine throughout history
  • Identify some of the problems with applying the "intellectual property" model to ethnobotanical resources
