Course Description

A retail clothing store most likely did not grow its own cotton, spin it into thread, weave that thread into cloth, and then package the shirt in cardboard made from trees it grew and processed. Instead, a complex supply network provided raw and manufactured materials to that store at various stages, and the store used those partnerships to focus its business on what it does best. This is true regardless of industry. Before a customer buys a product, there is a long sequence of activities that led to that sale. Each of these stages in the sequence involved a relationship with one or more companies, and value was created at each step. These companies have a complex relationship, as they collaborate as partners within the same industry to create value, yet they also compete with one another for a share of that value. In this lesson, you will identify the tensions that exist as companies, suppliers, and customers all work for a position within a market. You will also describe the two types of chains that exist as companies operate within their industry: the supply chain and the value chain.
