California is known internationally for its wines. It is a geographically large state with great diversity in its climate, resulting in a vast array of grape varietals that it can grow and wines it can produce.

In this lesson, you will explore how California’s geography creates ideal grape-growing microclimates. You will consider how these microclimates affect what varietals can be grown. You will also investigate how the climate conditions affect the final characteristics of the mature grapes, even within the same varietals. You will examine the California labeling requirements and practice interpreting California wine labels to anticipate the characteristics of different wines.
