Course Description

At-will employment is the standard in the United States, meaning that most employees can be fired for a good reason, a bad reason, or no reason at all. Even so, there are exceptions to at-will employment. Employees who are covered by these exceptions may have additional protections against unlawful dismissal. In this lesson, you’ll examine the ramifications of at-will employment and explore the implicit and explicit contracts that can alter this status. You will consider the question of whether employees in two different cases have legal claims to sue their employers for unfair or arbitrary dismissal. You will also take a look at the implications for your own workplace when you identify exceptions to at-will employment at your organization.
