Course Description

Speaking up and responding is a fundamental part of taking care of and supporting your community. It’s also key to ensuring that you and everyone in your community are treated with dignity and respect. In this course, you will evaluate what kinds of behavior require speaking up and responding, and what benefits can come from standing up for others in cases of bias or discrimination. You will then explore different ways you might choose to respond, ranging from directly supporting the person who experienced the effects of the inappropriate behavior, through various forms of bystander intervention, and, ultimately, to more formal processes.

You will examine the concept of calling in and calling out, and how you might use these strategies when necessary. You will also explore the ways in which you can respond to feedback when someone else speaks up about a mistake that you have made. In addition, you will determine what the expectations are for managers in responding to bias and discrimination, and how to create a safe and supportive environment where everyone can thrive. At the end of the course, you will assemble your personalized intervention toolkit, with some go-to strategies you might choose to use when you see the need to stand up for others.

Throughout the course, you will fill out a private reflection journal that is yours to keep.

These courses must be taken in order, and this course follows “Engaging With Different Perspectives.”
