Course Description

As you begin to understand the functional requirements of your system, you'll want to organize those functions in a format that you can share within and beyond your team. Each team member brings a different skill set to the project, so there may be competing needs and opposing ideas about your system. In order to manage these different views about your system, you need to have a way to outline what all the key functions are. You need to show clearly what your system has to do, as well as highlight how the functions need to interact with one another. What is needed is a Functional Flow Block Diagram (FFBD), which provides a visual representation of the functional architecture of your system. In this lesson, you will develop a basic Functional Flow Block Diagram and elaborate on it by creating functional blocks, using arrows and shortcuts to describe operational flow, and adding logic gates to define loops and branching behaviors. This lesson will allow you to gain experience with the rules and syntax of FFBDs to effectively use in the engineering design process.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Map the functions of your system
