Course Description

Building material selection directly shapes the health, comfort, and sustainability of indoor environments. As occupants and investors demand healthier, more resilient spaces, understanding the relationship between building components and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) has become a core competency for commercial real estate professionals.

In this course, you will explore how material life cycles, from sourcing to disposal, impact both occupant well-being and environmental performance. You’ll analyze the interplay among materials selection, air quality, thermal comfort, lighting, and acoustics to gain a holistic view of how each decision contributes to a healthier indoor ecosystem.

By developing the ability to critically assess sustainability claims and implement effective materials strategies, you will be empowered to create spaces that prioritize both human health and environmental responsibility. Upon completion of the course, you’ll be prepared to make evidence-based choices that elevate the quality and sustainability of the built environment.
