Course Description

How do nations address shared challenges in an interconnected world, and what threatens democratic systems today? This course explores the evolution of international relations from colonial times to our present era of complex global institutions. You'll examine how nations balance cooperation with sovereignty as they confront challenges no country can solve alone—from climate change to migration crises, from pandemic response to economic integration.

You'll investigate patterns of political change, analyzing how countries have moved between democratic and autocratic systems in distinct "waves" since the early 20th century. While the 1990s saw unprecedented democratic expansion, you'll explore why some countries successfully transition to democracy while others develop hybrid systems or experience democratic backsliding.

Through discussions and analytical activities, you'll evaluate different approaches to international cooperation and examine scholarly debates about democracy's future. You'll analyze specific global issues, considering how international institutions both help and complicate potential solutions, while assessing whether recent democratic decline represents a serious threat or temporary setback.

You are required to have completed the following courses or have equivalent experience before taking this course:

  • Defining Democracy
  • Responsible Citizenship in Modern Democracies
