Certificate Description

Despite healthcare organizations often hiring women and men at similar rates, systemic power structures and gender dynamics continue to favor men's contributions, creating barriers for even the most experienced and capable women advancing to executive positions.

This certificate prepares healthcare leaders to navigate today’s complex healthcare environment where gender imbalances persist at the highest levels of leadership. Led by renowned faculty authors Elizabeth Mannix and Sunita Sah, both widely published in healthcare leadership, the program will equip you with valuable insights to understand and address these dynamics within the healthcare field, exploring strategies to lead with authenticity, make sound decisions, build strong relationships, and drive meaningful change within healthcare organizations.

Each course develops essential leadership capabilities that can be leveraged to recognize and navigate challenges. You will begin by clarifying your own values and leadership purpose, then build structured decision-making skills to reduce bias, analyze complex problems, and implement effective solutions. Courses will also address the unique obstacles women face when advocating for themselves, their teams, and their institutions.

The program culminates with tactics for leveraging negotiation as a strategic leadership skill and explores ways to build inclusive networking practices while understanding how gender and power dynamics impact relationship-building. By the end of this certificate, you will discover how to employ communication techniques that foster courage, trust, and resilience to effectively lead in the healthcare space while fostering more inclusive environments for all.

This program includes two years of free access to Symposium! These events feature live, highly participatory virtual Zoom sessions with Cornell faculty and experts to explore today’s most pressing topics. Throughout the year, you may participate in as many sessions as you wish. Attending a Symposium is not required to successfully complete the certificate program.

The content of this certificate program is focused on developing and supporting women in healthcare leadership. This program is open to students of all sexes and gender identities.
